What is a conversion, and how do you track one on a simple website?

Traffic isn't the number that matters. The number that matters is how many visitors actually did the thing the page was built to make them do.

A conversion is any specific, meaningful action a visitor takes that counts as the site doing its job: submitting a contact form, clicking to call, requesting a quote. Traffic without a conversion tied to it just tells you people showed up, not whether the site actually worked.

Defining a conversion before tracking one

Before setting anything up, decide what actually counts. For most small service business sites, that's usually one or more of: a contact form submission, a click on a phone number, or a click on an email link. Some sites also track a click to a scheduling tool as a conversion if that's part of the funnel.

Setting it up in Google Analytics

Modern Google Analytics (GA4) tracks form submissions and outbound clicks somewhat automatically through its enhanced measurement features, but confirming those events are actually being marked as conversions requires a short manual step in the admin settings. It's worth checking this is actually configured rather than assuming it's automatic.

Click-to-call as its own conversion

A tap on a phone number is one of the highest-intent actions a mobile visitor can take, and it should be tracked separately from a form submission, since the two often behave very differently depending on the page and audience. See click-to-call: why your phone number belongs in the header.

Why this matters more than raw traffic

A page that gets fewer visitors but converts a higher share of them into calls or form submissions is doing more real work for the business than a high-traffic page that converts almost nobody. Without conversion tracking, that difference is invisible.

Questions

Do I need to track conversions if I'm not running paid ads?

Yes. Conversion tracking is just as useful for understanding organic traffic and content performance as it is for measuring ad spend.

How do I know if my conversion tracking is actually working?

Submit a test form or click a test call link yourself, then check whether it shows up in the analytics platform within a day. If it doesn't, the setup needs a second look.

What's the difference between a conversion and a goal?

In practice they're often used interchangeably; "goal" was the older Google Analytics terminology, largely replaced by "conversion events" in the current version of the platform.
