Answer engine optimization for small businesses

AEO has a real, useful meaning underneath the buzzword. For a small business, most of what it actually asks you to do overlaps with good SEO you should be doing anyway.

Answer engine optimization, usually shortened to AEO, is the practice of writing and structuring content so that AI-powered tools, like Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Gemini, can find it, understand it and cite it when they generate an answer to someone's question. It's a real, specific shift in how people search. It's also, for a small business, mostly a matter of doing the fundamentals well rather than learning an entirely separate discipline.

How it's different from regular SEO

The core difference is what counts as success. Traditional SEO competes for a click: you rank, someone clicks your link, they land on your page. AEO competes for a citation: an AI tool reads your content, decides it answers the question well, and either names your business directly in its answer or links to you as a source, sometimes without the person ever visiting your site at all.

That changes what "winning" looks like. You can be the source behind an answer and never see it in your normal analytics, because no click happened.

How big is this, really?

Estimates for how often AI Overviews show up in Google searches vary a lot depending on who's measuring and what kind of queries they're tracking, from roughly 20% to 50% of US searches. It's worth knowing that the picture looks different for the kind of searches a local trade cares about most: one tracking service found AI Overviews appear in only about 7% of searches with clear local intent, well below the overall rate. AI answers are real and growing, but for "plumber near me" style searches, plain search results, Google's map pack and reviews still do most of the work right now.

What actually helps, and it overlaps heavily with SEO

The practices that help a page get cited by an AI tool are, for the most part, the same practices that help it rank normally:

If you've already done the things covered elsewhere in this Bulletin, you've already done most of what AEO asks for. See how to get your business recommended by AI assistants for the practical checklist and the research behind it.

Where it genuinely differs from SEO in practice

The honest takeaway for a small business

Don't treat AEO as a separate project competing for your time against SEO. Treat it as the same work, done well: accurate information, real answers to real questions, and schema that matches what's true, kept consistent everywhere your business appears.

Questions

Do I need special tools to do AEO?

Not to start. The fundamentals, accurate content and schema, don't require anything beyond what's covered elsewhere in this Bulletin. Tools that let you query multiple AI assistants and track citations exist, but they're an optimization on top of the basics, not a replacement for them.

Is AEO more important than traditional SEO now?

For most local trade searches, no, not yet. AI Overviews remain a small share of local-intent searches specifically. Both are worth doing, and they share almost all the same underlying work.

Will focusing on AEO hurt my regular SEO?

No. The practices reinforce each other. There's no meaningful trade-off between the two for a small business doing the fundamentals well.
